GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- Dozens of people gathered outside City Hall at noon Friday to rally for recently elected councilman Rick Brainard to step down, following a domestic violence incident on Saturday with his girlfriend.

During the rally, demonstrators had an opportunity to share their experiences and opinion. Some talked about their own experience with domestic violence. At the demonstration, donations were collected for Latimer House.

Linda Moran, who voted for Brainard, organized the event.

“I always assume the best morals and integrity of any person until they are proven otherwise, and he proved otherwise,” Moran said. “He needs to step down.”

Brainard release a statement Tuesday expressing his gratitude for support people have shown him and his plans to fulfill his seat.
