GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - District 51 is now enrolling students in its new online public school.
Grande River Virtual Academy will launch this fall with all grades, K-12.
The alternative school is meant for students who feel like the traditional classroom is not the best fit for them -- including students who are advanced and find school boring, or those who need a little extra time grasping certain concepts.
Though students will spend a good chunk of time learning in front of a computer, they'll also be required to do reading and writing away from the screen. They'll also have opportunities to attend labs and other classes in an actual school and receive face-to-face time with local teachers.
"Kids get a District 51 diploma through Grande River," said Ron Roybal, Director of Alternative Schools for District 51. "They also can play sports and take courses in their neighborhood home schools, and also there's clubs and activities available."
Because the school is public, it's free to enroll and all materials -- except for a computer -- will be provided by the district.
