GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- Thanksgiving is this week, and for many, that means holiday shopping will soon follow. Some local store owners say they've already seen an increase since the lights went up on Main Street.

"We've already had some people in from the tree lighting the other night, and just a good weekend because people are feeling festive already, even though it's not even Thanksgiving yet," said Katie Sewalson, manager at Summit Canyon Mountaineering.

Many stores including Girlfriends will have extended hours over the holidays.

"We are doing special hours now. We will be open on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. from here on out until Christmas, and starting in December, we will be open until 6:30 Monday through Friday," said Girlfriends owner Jennie Mason.

Summit Canyon Mountaineering is doing a special program called "One Warm Coat." The coat drive will benefit local people in the community through United Way. Those who donate a used coat at the store will get a 20 percent discount on winter outerwear.

"What we strive for is great customer service, free gift wrapping, and different and unique items rather than the big box stores," said Mason.

Small Business Saturday is this weekend, Nov. 24. Mason said today is the first day to register for your $25 store credit on the American Express website.
