GLADE PARK, Colo. (KKCO) -- A family is forced to evacuate their home when the attic catches fire.

The Grand Junction Fire Department responded to a house fire at 116 Glade Park Road at 4 a.m. Thursday.

A person called 911 to report smoke coming from an attic. When crews arrived, they found a small fire there.

Firefighters removed the ceiling in a bedroom and worked through the exterior attic vents to access the fire.

The residents of the home were able to get out safely, despite no smoke alarm going off. One person woke to the smell of smoke in the room, ran to wake up the others and evacuated.

The fire was confined to the attic region. GJFD says the home has about $10,000 worth of damage, and about $10,000 worth of items inside were destroyed.

No injuries have been reported. Investigators have not released a cause.

The fire department reminds everyone that a working smoke detector is your best chance of surviving a house fire, so maintain your alarms and practice family fire drills.
