Fire damages structure at Elk Creek Mine

SOMERSET, Colo. Oxbow Mining crews are still trying to assess the damage caused by a fire at their facility in Somerset after a blaze sparked up on a conveyor belt yesterday.

According to Michael Ludlow with the Oxbow Mining Company, a conveyor-belt caught fire at their Elk Creek facility around 12:30 p.m. on Monday and crews from the Paonia Volunteer Fire Department responded.

The fire was contained, however an adjoining structure was damaged by the fire and crews are still trying to remove the structure before assessing the extent and cost of the damages.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
