GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- A fire near a grocery store causes quite a scare for workers and shoppers inside.

The Grand Junction Fire Department was called out to the Safeway store on Horizon Drive on reports of smoke around 12:15 p.m., according to GJFD Public Information Officer Mike Page.

When crews arrived, they discovered a fire had started in some cardboard boxes behind the store and spread to wooden pallets nearby.

Page says the flames started to climb up the store's outer wall, but the building is made from non-combustible materials, so the fire did not go inside.

Shoppers were initially evacuated from the store but were allowed to return shortly after.

About 15 firefighters responded to the scene with four engines.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
