Fitness apps help on-the-go users stay in shape

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- With our on-the-go lifestyles, sometimes it can be difficult to squeeze in a workout, or so we say.

These days it's not uncommon to see someone attached to their cell phone or tablet, but thanks to new technology and some free or inexpensive apps, you can work out and track your diet all at the tip of your fingertips.

That’s how Grand Junction resident Kevin Braa lost 14 pounds.

"Not the right food, not enough exercise, wasn't caring for myself,” Braa said of life before his weight loss.

A health scare made Braa change his lifestyle two and a half years ago.

"I found out I needed a stent placed," said Braa.

With some help from his cell phone and a couple of apps, Braa has gained a new healthier outlook on life.

Others are also finding this method successful.

"Apps like activity trackers or calorie counters it just helps you be more accountable without a personal trainer," said Chad Barlow, a personal trainer at Crossroads Fitness.

Fitness apps are giving users a personal trainer and dietitian away from home. Apps like Livestrong, My Plate and My Fitness Pal track calories consumed and exercise exerted.

"What food I'm eating during the day, it helps you portion out, and I also put in my exercise and water consumption," said Jennifer Grossheim Harris, who uses fitness apps.

Braa says it kept him accountable for what he ate eat, even when temptation struck.

"I knew I had to write it down in my app, so it kept me a little more honest," said Braa.

Others fitness apps can give users options for exercise on the road.

"If you go on vacation you still have the ability to enter your stuff in, so the excuse isn't there,” said Barlow.

For example, the Nike training app shows workouts and demonstrations for the user, just like a trainer. The apps will make sure you're staying on your A-game.

"It sort of reminds you if it hasn't heard from you in a few days to sort of get back on track," Harris said.

These apps can even track the nutrients you consume every day and let you know if you need to consider supplementing with another vitamin.

The users say the apps are very easy to use and self explanatory. Some of the apps in this story can be downloaded for free.
