Fruita, Colo. (KKCO) --- At about 12:40 this morning, three Fruita police officers pulled over a man for a traffic violation.

According to officials, when the man left his vehicle the officers opened fire, believing him to be armed.

The subject was declared dead at the scene.

Fruita Police Chief, Mark Angelo, says that a critical incident team, consisting of the Grand Junction Police Department, the Mesa County Sheriff's Department and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, has been brought together to investigate the incident.

"The officers are fine and no other person was injured or involved in the incident that we are aware of at this time," said Angelo. "We have several witnesses that need to be interviewed, several people that have to be interviewed including the officers, and that’s being conducted as we speak."

Law enforcement officials have not released the name of the man and say that more information likely won't be available until Monday.
