GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- The countdown to CMU classes is on and many families and students are getting ready to move on campus.
Classes won't be in session until August 19th, but residence halls will be opening their doors as early as tomorrow for some Colorado Mesa University students and it's important to make sure you and your student are prepared for dorm life.
Michelle Roscfainberg, is starting her sophomore year at CMU, and is already gearing up to move into her dorm. And coming from out of state, she turns to the Internet to help her move in.
“I’m an out of state student from Hawaii so I try to buy stuff online, and look ahead and get textbooks online and I have it shipped to the dorm, therefore I don't have to pay extra shipping from my house to Hawaii and to help make things more convenient," said Roscfainberg.
Celia O'Connor was an R.A. last year at the university and she recommends packing light.
“Definitely have seen parents take a truckload home because there's just not enough room. You know that you're going to be traveling home during the winter time, it's best to only bring your fall clothes and then go back and get your winter clothes," said O’Connor.
On the top of O'Connor and Roscfainberg's must-have list, when it comes to being prepared for dorm living, is bedding.
“Have really good bedding, I think that's one of the most important things, have enough padding and everything you want," said Roscfainberg.
“Bedding and if you're not living in a traditional hall, definitely always have toilet paper- that is the number one issue," said O’Connor.
And if you're moving in your dorm this weekend, then Roscfainberg, has some advice.
“I would try to get there early because it's going to be really crowded because of the amount of stuff you have to bring in and there's a lot of people that have to use dollies," said Roscfainberg.
Both of the ladies stressed the importance of getting involved and participating in opening week events. They also said communication with your roommates is important so you don't wind up purchasing duplicate items you can easily share, such as a trash can and microwave.
CMU is getting new dorms this year, The Renaissance Village, opening on August 15th.
