GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- More than one thousand young girls are inspiring the community to get fit.
On Saturday, the Girls on the Run program hosted its 5k walk-run event at the Long Family Memorial Park.
These girls participate in the after school program to develop personal skills, learn healthy eating and decision making skills and train for a 5k event.
The girls range from 3rd to 8th graders, and come from all over Western Colorado.
"It's the culminating event for more than 1500 girls who are doing girls who are doing Girls on the Run this spring. The girls come from Western Garfield County, Mesa County, Montrose County, Delta County and Moab, Utah," Girls on the Run leader Jill Henwood said.
Families, coaches and teachers also made up some of the 2,300 runners Saturday morning.
Club organizers hope it inspires the girls to have healthy and active lifestyles as they get older.
