GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- Trick-or-treating is one of those time-honored traditions that kids and parents look forward to every year, but Halloween night can get scary without the proper precautions.

According to Cars.com, Halloween is the deadliest day of the year for child pedestrians. An average of 5.5 fatalities happen on Oct. 31 every year, compared to 2.6 on most other days.

Research from State Farm Insurance says more than 60 percent of Halloween accidents happen from 5 to 9 p.m., prime trick-or-treating time.

So here are some tips from Cars.com before you head out tonight.

• Applying reflective tape to your kids’ costumes can increase visibility to drivers.


• Glow sticks are fun for kids to carry and will help them stay visible as the sun sets this evening.


• Flashlights, of course, a good alternative, whether parents or kids are holding them. Make sure you have fresh batteries before heading out.


• Check that your kids’ costumes fit them properly. Loose or hanging costumes are easy for kids to trip over, and make sure they can see well out of masks. In fact, you can opt for non-toxic face paint instead of a mask.
