Grand Junction, Colo. (KKCO) – As the snow hits Grand Junction, lakes and ponds are starting to freeze. This could create dangerous conditions for both dogs and their owners.

Even with the latest freezing temperature, most bodies of water only have a thin layer of ice covering them, making it easy for a dog or person to fall through.

Grand Junction fire officials say the best way you can protect yourself and our furry friends is by always putting a leash on them.

"Obviously dogs, you know, are part of the family, and we want to rescue them, but if you’re going in after your dog, you just have your own clothes on, and the biggest problem is you're going to get stuck in the ice, too. It’s really hard to get out of the ice by yourself, and there's a good chance you’re going to get caught in there as well," says Ryan Rice with the Grand Junction Fire Department.

Officials are hoping we have an incident free winter, but if your dog or someone falls through the ice, don't go in after them. Always call 911. It's the best chance of preserving life.
