GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - The Central Arizona Vaqueros have been wowing the JUCO crowds with their performance on the field. But it's what they're doing off the field that's making a big impact on the Grand Valley community.
The roar of the JUCO crowd is unlike anything else many teams -- and fans for that matter -- get to experience.
"This is unreal, this is as big league as you can get for us," said Zach Dando, a pitcher for the Vaqueros..
But unfortunately it's not a sound that fans like Tyler Brady always get the chance to hear. A resident of a Mesa Developmental Services home, he lives with a severe developmental disability that makes it difficult to get him and others he lives with to the games.
But Tuesday, the game came to him.
"It's pretty cool that we get support from everyone around here, especially these guys," said Dando.
Tuesday afternoon, members of the Central Arizona College baseball team visited the home where they talked with residents, posed for pictures, and even left them with a few souvenirs.
"We get to play baseball every single day and we get to use our whole bodies," said Dando. "It's just really cool to come out here and try to help these guys out in anyway we can hopefully lift their spirits."
For Tyler, who was once a manager for the Central High School baseball team, it did a lot more than that.
"To get the autographed ball signed by the whole team, he was so surprised with that and so thrilled with it," said Marilee Langfitt, Public Relations Director for Mesa Developmental Services.
MDS says there's no measuring what the visit meant to the residents.
"It's awesome," said Langfitt. "It's just awesome and they were fantastic young men."
And in turn, the residents say they know which team they'll be rooting for the rest of the week.
"Arizona [is my favorite team]," said group home resident Paul Baldwin.
