GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - The gloves were definitely off out at the Grand Junction Motor Speedway Saturday as area first responders squared off against each other and the military.

They were gathered for the 3rd Annual Kart Racing For Heroes event, duking it out on the track for bragging rights and a $200 donation to their favorite charity.

There was also a media race where some familiar KKCO 11 News faces took on another area TV station just for fun.

It's all organized by a man who lost his son to a drunk driver and appreciates the hard job our first responders have when it comes to responding to the scene of a fatal drunk driving accident.

"We don't always realize what it takes to do these jobs," says Event Organizer Craig Mansfield. "They're on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week and you and I are at home sleeping in our beds. Safe because of what they do."

As it turns out, KKCO 11 News Noon Anchor Leigh Ashman took third place at today's event. Though it was KKCO 11 News Anchor Glen Mills who says it best about why everyone was present today, "In the business we work in, we talk about drunk driving all the time and we can see the devastating effect it can have [drunk driving]. You really feel for the law enforcement officers who have to go onto that scene and what they see."

This weekend's event also gives members of the public the chance to thank our service men and women as well as first responders, try on impairment goggles and get signed up for the Buddy Program. It gives you a list of someone to fall back on if you ever find yourself unable to drive home after a night out.

Sunday morning there's a pancake breakfast for Father's Day. It's $4/person and the money goes to the Grand Mesa Little League. That starts at 7 a.m. and is followed by a day of kart racing by some of the hottest drivers in the state.
