GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) At midnight on Tuesday morning the federal government shut down for the first time in 17 years.

The House passed a spending bill that does not provide funding for the Affordable Care Act, which has caused problems in the Senate as it urges full funding of the program.

President Obama addressed the nation on Monday and said he hopes for Congress, specifically the House, to do the right thing.

For locals, the concern is how they will be impacted by the government shutting down.

Navy Veteran, Amber Levins, is disabled and said she relies on the checks she receives from the Department of Veteran Affairs to support her family.

If the government shuts down until late October, there will not be enough funding to give Levins and 3.6 million other veterans compensation and pension checks.

The longest and most recent government shut down was in 1995 and lasted 21 days.
