MESA COUNTY, Colo. Colorado lawmakers are back to work as the 2014 Legislative session started up today and two of our local representatives spoke with us about their plans for the Western Slope.

State lawmakers have convened in Denver for the 2014 Legislative session. Even though today was a shorter day at the State Capitol, it was still an important one, laying down the agenda for the new year.

Senate Minority Leader, Bill Cadman, made an opening day speech. He addressed Colorado's economic recovery and Wright says Cadman recognized that not all areas of the state are on the economic upswing, such as the Western Slope. Wright hopes this acknowledgment will help his fellow colleagues work with representatives like himself, to help rural areas create jobs.

"Bring different types of jobs, other than simply the energy sector, we need to diversify and have manufacturing jobs, we need technology jobs, to bring those types of businesses to Western Colorado," said Rep. Jared Wright (R) Fruita.

Economic development is on the forefront of Wright's agenda, along with two bills he plans on introducing.

Wright plans on creating a bill to help the management of our public lands and a bill that will provide a tax deduction a tax deduction for the 250,000 Coloradans who lost their health care due to the Obamacare mandate.

Representative Ray Scott says jobs on the Western Slope are on his agenda as well. And he wants to put pressure on the governor to help Western Colorado.

Tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. Governor John Hickenlooper will deliver the Annual State of the State Speech.

After the governor's speech is when business in the legislature is expected to really start up.
