MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KKCO)- Local volunteers and ranchers are stepping up to support our returning wounded service men and women by hosting a three-day, elk-hunting and fishing trip.
The two days of hunting and fishing will be done exclusively in the Glade Park area. Six veterans are coming from out of state, and one veteran is 77-year-old Eugene Nelson of Grand Junction. Nelson served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict.
Notch Spring Ranch, O’Dell Land and Livestock, Hawks Cattle Company, Ute Trail Ranch, Merrit Cove, and Picture Gallery are all local ranchers that are donating significantly to make this veteran hunting experience in Mesa County a reality.
Prior to hunting, the veterans will be sighting rifles with award-winning sharp shooter Tasha (Hanish) Ericson and famed Navy Seal sniper Chris Kyle.
Kyle is also the author of “American Sniper” and currently is on the Reality television show “Stars Earn Stripes” with actor Dean Cain. Warriors Road Trip Network and Patriot Promotions are also sponsoring the event.
On Friday, Sept. 28, from 3 to 4 p.m., the veterans and Kyle will be the guest of honor for the GJHS football team dinner in the Grand Junction High School cafeteria. The veterans will be on the field at Stocker Stadium as special guests of the football team captains during the coin toss at 7 p.m.
On Saturday, Sept. 29, the veterans and Kyle will be in the Fruita Fall Festival parade and then will stay around the Festival all day. Donations will be taken throughout the day to support the Wounded Warriors Project and their nationwide mission.
