Main Street businesses changing downtown's traditional reputation

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) Main Street may be known for shutting down after normal business hours, but some businesses are trying to change that traditional mindset.

"Usually dad worked and mom stayed home and it's evolved now to where mom and dad worked and Main Street is normally open when everybody is working," said Rock Cesario, owner of Triple Play Records. "So we felt like if we're open when working people are shopping, they like to come downtown and we don't give them an alternative if we're not open."

Triple Play Records began staying open on Sundays two years ago and Cesario said it is now their busiest day of the week.

"I think it's great to listen to your customers and if you want the younger people to shop your business then you have to be open the later hours," Cesario said.

But other businesses said traditional hours are actually what work best for their customers.

"We tried being open Sundays year round and it didn't seem to work out," said Cyndi Edmunds, owner of Zephyr of Grand Junction. "There just didn't seem to be the traffic and I'm not sure if it's because people aren't used to downtown being open on Sundays."

Shoppers said there are pros and cons to the variety of business hours on Main Street on Sundays and the evenings.

"Main Street's a great asset for the community," said Joshua Tafoya, of Grand Junction. "I wish there were more businesses open on the weekends and through later hours, but it's also nice to come down here when it's not as busy."
