MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KKCO) – The man accused of stealing his date’s vehicle and crashing it into a train will make his first court appearance Wednesday.

David Ryan Goebel, 27, was booked into the Mesa County Jail on six charges with a $10,000 bond after the incident Saturday night.

According to his arrest affidavit, Goebel was on a date that night with Danielle Murch, who says she met him a couple weeks before on an online dating website.

On Jan. 12, the two met at the Thunder Mountain Tavern in Orchard Mesa to get to know each other and then rode together in her car to Infinity Night club.

When they walked in, Murch says she checked her coat and gave her keys to Goebel to hold. The two separated as Murch went on the dance floor, but she soon got a text from Goebel, telling her to come outside.

Murch walked out the front door just in time to see her green 1997 Saturn driving away with Goebel in the driver’s seat, the affidavit says.

She saw people chasing the car because they say the driver backed into a vehicle belonging to a nightclub staff member before it drove away on North Avenue.

Shortly after, the Grand Junction Police Department received reports of a car versus train accident near I-70 B and 29 Road, involving the same green 1997 Saturn. The train’s engineer told investigators that he saw a person run from the car after it was hit.

About 18 minutes after the collision, police detained Goebel near 28 Road and I-70 B. When they searched him, they found Murch’s wallet and keys on him. During an interview with an officer, Goebel denied knowing about the car crash and said he had another man’s wallet but did not know who it belonged to, according to the affidavit.

Goebel was taken into custody and charged with first degree aggravated motor vehicle theft, first degree criminal trespass of an automobile, driving a vehicle under restraint for an alcohol/drug offense, leaving a scene after striking an unattended vehicle, failing to notify police of an accident, and careless driving.
