GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- A man takes justice into his own hands when he happens to discover his stolen vehicle.

The Orchard Mesa man -- whose name has not been released-- reported his Jeep Cherokee stolen on Wednesday, according to Grand Junction Police Spokesperson Kate Porras.

Just before 10 Friday morning, the man was driving in the desert on 27 ¼ Road when he happened to spot his stolen Jeep on the side of the road.

When he approached it, he saw a man sleeping inside.

Instead of waiting for police to arrive, the auto theft victim drew a gun and held the suspect at gunpoint until officers came.

Porras says as the officers were dealing with the situation, another car with three people inside drove quickly up to the scene, ignoring officers' commands to stop and stay back.

Officers pulled their weapons and detained the trio riding inside, along with the auto theft suspect. Police believe they somehow know the man found sleeping in the Jeep.

Porras says no one has been arrested at this time. Now, officers are processing both vehicles and checking for stolen property.

While pulling a gun worked for this man, Porras wants to remind people that it may not be the best option in every situation.

"We also want people to remember that things can quickly turn bad, and so you need to think about your own safety first. He certainly did the right thing in calling 911 immediately," said Porras.

Grand Theft Auto, no problem; A few minutes looking down the business end of a handgun, Priceless! That’s the problem with trying to educate the criminal element. You just don’t get a second chance to make a first impression. PRICELESS!
