Man gets prison time in shooting of Rifle officer

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) -- A man convicted of shooting and wounding a Rifle police officer in 2010 has been sentenced to 29 years in prison.

An Associated Press contributor reports Phil Amonette apologized to officer Garrett Duncan in court Tuesday. His attorneys had argued the shooting was accidental.

Duncan was shot while investigating a domestic violence report. He was shielded by a protective vest and a phone in his chest pocket. Another officer who was with Duncan returned fire, wounding Amonette.

A jury acquitted Amonette in July of first-degree attempted murder but convicted him of first-degree assault against a peace officer with a deadly weapon and criminal mischief-domestic violence.
