MESA COUNTY, Colo. Mesa County is seeing some of the lowest numbers in years for foreclosed homes.

The Public Trustee's office received 718 new foreclosure filings in 2013, which is down from 1,272 in 2012.

"Overall the economy appears to be improving because our foreclosures have dropped to about 61 percent of what they were the prior year," said Public Trustee Mike Moran. "That's good news for Mesa County."

Filings hit a high between 2011 and 2012, right after the rest of the country saw an increase in 2010.

December 2013's filings and sales were the lowest of any month in the last three years.

Foreclosure numbers are still not as low as they were ten years ago in Mesa County, but even in a healthy economy, foreclosures are not uncommon, Moran said.

"There's still people that are struggling out there," he said. "Even in healthy times, in the best economies, we'll still see probably a few hundred foreclosures every year."
