More rain means more campfires for campers on Grand Mesa

Grand Mesa, Colo. (KKCO) --- With extra rainfall this summer and no fire ban on the Grand Mesa, campers are free to add some warmth and fun to their nights in the woods.

Loriann Gieseman said campfires are what her daughter looks forward to the most when they go camping.

"That's a big thing because she wants to sit around the campfire at night and make her s'mores and roast hot dogs," Gieseman said. "I've been up here before when there was a fire ban and we couldn't do that."

Gieseman and her family stayed at Island Lake in Grand Mesa Wednesday night and they said they were thankful there is no fire ban.

"Came not too long ago with some friends and we couldn't have a fire because they had a fire ban," said camper Daniel Lee Miller. "So it's nice to be able to actually sit have a fire again and sit around that, make s'mores and what not."

Grand Valley Park Ranger Sam Manning said last winter's snowfall along with the extra rain this summer has lessened the possibility of wildfires to a level lower than normal for this time of year.

"Camping can be camping," he said. "It's always tough when there's a fire ban going on and people can't have fires and they're up here trying to have family fun."

However, Manning said we're not completely in the clear yet.

"There's always chances that it could get really warm and dry out and something could start up," he said.

He recommends being careful about making campfires no matter what the weather is like, which includes using a fire pit and taking the time to make sure the fire is completely out.

"There's always hot embers underneath the fire and sometimes those can spark up two, three days later," Manning said.
