MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KKCO) A group of motorcycle riders headed down the east side of the Colorado National Monument say one of their group died in a crash before 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

"At this point we do not expect any alcohol or drugs played any part in this," says Colorado State Patrol Sergeant Justin Mitchell. "We also do not at this time expect that excessive speed played a part in this accident either."

All four men are from the Dallas-Fort Worth area and were making a cross country trip to visit friends in Wyoming.

Law enforcement officials say they are unsure of the cause of the accident but speculate that either driver error or a medical incident led to the fatal crash.

The riders were heading into town after a ride from west to east when the accident happened, near the upper access point for the Serpents Trail Trailhead.
