MESA COUNTY, Colo. The Mesa County Commissioners unanimously voted to support the million dollar project to boost the economy and also to get national attention if Olympic trials are held here.

After the existing track was established in 2006, it quickly became the number one BMX track in Colorado and with new plans in the works, some say it could become one of the best in the country.

The new track will be moved from the back of the fairgrounds closer to the highway. That will allow for more space for the track and create a bigger area for fans. On average, BMX events bring in between 1,000 and 4,000 participant and for every rider there are usually three people watching from the stands.

Along with the bigger space, the track could be chosen as one of the six spots across the country that will host Olympic qualifying events.

"The amount of people that will come to Mesa County will really put mesa county on the map," Rose Pugliese, Mesa County Commissioner.

The price tag on the project is $1.3 million, but only about half of that will go to the BMX track and the other half will fund the maintenance and construction of new facilities for equestrian and livestock arenas.

"These projects are just going to help the fairgrounds reach its ultimate better potential for this community," Jo Carole-Haxel, Mesa County Fairgrounds Manager.

The design of the track is still being worked on and when it's complete construction companies will place bids on the project in the fall. Officials hope construction will begin by January so the track will be complete and ready for competition no later than July 2015.
