One injured in Cafe Rio flash fire

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) – A gas leak ignites at Café Rio Mexican Grill.

The fire started in the restaurant’s kitchen at 2412 Patterson Road around 8:50 a.m. According to Grand Junction Fire Captain Gus Hendricks, a gas line under repair caught fire, causing a small amount of flames and some light smoke.

The fire flashed up and burned one employee, who was taken to the hospital.

Firefighters say the flames did not spread far, and most of the damage inside the restaurant is from the sprinkler system when it poured water into the kitchen.

An employee activated the kitchen hood extinguish system, according to Hendricks. Only a few workers were inside at the time and immediately evacuated.

The cause is still under investigation.
