GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- Summer accidents and deaths are making headlines around the state and even right here on the Western Slope and officials say taking proper safety precautions may be the step you take that saves your life or the life of a loved one.

Today a man died from a zip-lining accident in Canon City, Colorado and just last week Senator Udall's brother died while hiking in Wyoming. This past weekend, a man died from drowning while floating the Colorado River and one week before his death- a handicapped man had to be rescued from the river when his raft was punctured.

Mesa County Search and Rescue officials say they see a rise in rescue calls in the summer.

"Things look great, it's a nice day and you really don't think about it as much as you do in the winter time," said Bill Thomas, Operations Manager of Mesa County Search and Rescue.

Thomas has been working as a Search and Rescue volunteer for over three decades and says it all comes down to the basics when it comes to outdoor safety.

"I've seen a lot of it and it still boils down to a few basics; take the right gear, let somebody know where you're going and what time you'll be back and take your cell phone. it's just that basic," said Thomas.

Officials at the Mesa County Sheriff's Office say it's extremely important to stay hydrated in the hot temperatures and they say if you lose a raft while floating the river to call dispatch and report it. Otherwise, the Search and Rescue Team will set out to look for a missing person if they discover an empty raft.

The Mesa County Search and Rescue Team is composed of volunteers. If you are interested in applying you can do so through The Mesa County Sheriff's Office.
