PALISADE, Colo. (KKCO) – The chief of police in Palisade will no longer be working for the department.

On Oct. 24, Carroll Quarles found out that he won’t be serving as Palisade police chief anymore after 17 years in that position.

“He [Quarles] does have the option to resign,” said Town Administrator Rich Sales. “He hasn’t made that decision yet.” He has 21 days from Oct. 24 to decide.

Sales declined to comment on why Quarles was asked to resign, saying it is a personnel matter.

“I hope citizens understand that the chief did very good things here and that they’ll thank him when they see him,” said Sales.

Now, Commander Mike Nordine of the Grand Junction Police Department has been asked to serve as interim chief while town officials search for a new, full-time chief.

As Town Administrator, Sales is ultimately in charge of picking a new chief, but he says a member from the board of trustees, a few officers, the HR director and others will be in on the interview process. Sales says they are updating the job description right now and then will list it in printed ads and online.

According to Sales, the process could take three to four months. He says he doesn’t anticipate challenges in day-to-day activity during the transition.

“We have full contingency. There is no lack of service to the citizens at this point. As far as they're concerned, they should always see the same level of protection they've always enjoyed,” said Sales.
