GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) – Police say DNA evidence helped them piece together who was driving a vehicle that rolled and killed a person and charge the man responsible.

The crash happened on Jan. 19, 2011, on D ½ Road. Shannon Gallegos, 39, died on scene, and Jason Wayne Shriver, 35, was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

After the incident, the Grand Junction Police Department’s Traffic Unit used laser mapping technology and DNA evidence to reconstruct the accident, according to a GJPD release.

Now, investigators believe Shriver was the driver of the vehicle and that he was speeding as he drove toward an “S” curve in the 2900 block of D ½ Road. The car hit a concrete curb and rolled many times. Both Shriver and Gallegos were ejected from the vehicle.

Detectives compared the location of hair and skin evidence on the sidewalk to the projected path of the vehicle. They learned that the DNA was from Gallegos, and it could only have been left by the passenger of the car.

Investigators also found Gallegos’ blood on the front passenger door, and his head injuries were consistent with evidence on the sidewalk.

On Wednesday, April 10, GJPD officers obtained an arrest warrant for Shriver. They arrested him in the 3200 block of White Avenue.

He was booked in the Mesa County Jail on vehicular homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol charges.
