Cooking Matters helps local, low income families learn how to make healthy food at a low cost.
When cooking for your family, Maran Parry with Cooking Matters says to remember the plate method.
"Fill half of our plate with fruits and vegetables, whether they're fresh frozen or canned, and a quarter of our plate whole grains and a quarter of our plate lean proteins," Parry.
Getting low-fat or non-fat varieties of food and watching your sodium intake will also keep your weight at a healthy level.
If you skip the kale and reach for the cupcakes, going to the gym will help shed those unwanted pounds.
"Any kind of cardiovascular exercise that's going to get their heart rate up and help them burn calories is going to be key," Mark Ryan, Gold's Gym.
Experts said you can still eat your favorite treats, but just do it in moderation.
