GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)-- Some kids may try to steer clear of leafy greens and whole grains, but Primary Care Partners is stepping up to help change the minds of little ones.

'We Can!' is a program designed for local youth to learn how to slim down and eat right.

Nine-year-old Bristol Lester just started the program and said she is excited to fix up some veggies.

"Instead of sitting on the couch eating junk food you could be out at a restaurant eating salad and fruits and all sorts of things that are healthy for you," said Lester.

Dr. Zind leads the program, which is funded for the next few years by a state grant.

"The program is open to any child between five and 18 in Mesa County that wants to make some changes and help their weight," said Zind.

Once a week, kids are invited to come by Primary Care Partners for cooking lessons and an exercise class.

"We all exercise together, and we've done yoga and kick boxing, hip hop and line dancing and all sorts of different exercises," said Zind.

Each Wednesday at 5 p.m., 12 to 15 kids show up for the two and a half hour class at no charge to them.

Dr. Zind wants to let people know that anyone is welcome to stop by, even if you don't have a doctors referral, you just have to do a quick consultation.
