RIFLE, Colo. (KKCO)-- Residents of Rifle are sleeping easier tonight knowing a near by fire isn’t causing any evacuations. The blaze flared up near mile marker 15 on Highway 13.
At one point, it shut down the highway in both directions. The fire has scorched 500 acres, and authorities believe it was human caused.
There are 75 firefighters helping keep the flames under control. They are also battling the blaze from the air. Even though there are no evacuations, it had some residents on alert.
"We are just hoping that it doesn't [grow]. This is the warming house, this is the stable, and we are just hoping it doesn't damage it," said Rifle resident Julie Snyder.
"I’ve dealt with fires before and that’s one thing that gets people hurt and killed is they panic, you keep a cool head, I am ready for it," said Rifle resident Kevin Smith.
Currently the fire isn't an immediate threat, but there is no estimate on containment.
