Record low temperatures hit Grand Junction

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - The deep freeze is all anyone is talking about.

Monday morning Grand Junction hit twelve degrees below zero, marking a new record low. The previous record was set in 1968, when the temperature dropped to seven degrees below zero.

"Tonight we expect the cold to continue," said National Weather Service meterologist Norv Larson. "We're looking for temperatures right around -12 again. That'll set another record, and then moving into Wednesday we could possibly set another record as this cold air isn't going to go anywhere."

Here's what you need to know to protect your home during this cold snap:

1. To avoid bursting pipes, officials recommend keeping cabinet doors open to allow warm air to circulate in your house.
2. Keep a slow trickle of water flowing through fauces connected to pipes which run through unheated areas.
