RIFLE, Colo. (KKCO) - Colorado State Patrol officials say a 26-year-old man was killed early Wednesday morning after losing control of his car and crashing head-on into an SUV.

Troopers say the man was headed northbound on County Road 319 in his 1991 Acura Integra when he lost control in a curve. He crossed over into the other lanes and hit a 1985 Jeep Cherokee.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Jeep was transported to the hospital in Rifle with non-life-threatening injuries. No one else was in either car.

State Patrol is withholding the names of the victims until their families have been notified.

Troopers say the cause of the crash is under investigation, but excessive speed is being considered a possible factor. The victim who died wasn't wearing his seatbelt correctly; the Jeep driver was belted in properly.
