UPDATE: SUV strikes and kills motorcyclist

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) – A motorcyclist loses his life this morning after colliding with an SUV.

Colorado State Patrol responded around 10 a.m. near 27 3/4 Road and Highway 50, close to City Market.

CSP says 49-year-old David Lee Smithey was traveling southbound on 27 3/4 Road when the driver attempted to cross Highway 50. He pulled in front of a Yukon SUV and was hit and knocked off his bike.

Smithey was ejected from the bike and the SUV continued westbound on Highway 50 for 650 feet.

The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash but was was pronounced dead at the scene.


GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) – A motorcyclist was struck and killed by an SUV at Highway 50 at 27 ¾ Road. The motorcyclist was found in the middle of the westbound lanes.

The Colorado State Patrol says the accident took place near mile marker 34 and 35. The person in the SUV was injured in the collision.
