Republican voters packed precincts throughout the Grand Valley Tuesday, hoping their voices would make a difference.

Precinct 13, at the Covenant Presbyterian on 32 Road, is the largest precinct in the county.

Everyone there was very attentive, as voters picked their favorite presidential candidate, and elected delegates to represent the precinct at the county convention.

It was crowded and at times spirited.

But when the smoke cleared, and it was time for Colorado Republicans to pick their favorite candidate, one name dominated the room.

Rick Santorum.

The meeting began rather uneventful, as caucus- goers went over local party business, and voted on who was going to run the caucus.

With that out of the way, the audience listened intently as people spoke on behalf of the county commissioner candidates.

Yes, there was also a presidential straw poll…

“The important thing about coming out here tonight is to let other people see that we are here, and we aren’t going away,” republican delegate hopeful Glen Bishard said.

And Rick Santorum took the cake at precinct 13, with over 60 percent of the vote.

But most of the debating went into deciding the delegates to send to the republican county convention on March 24. Five county delegates will represent precinct 13 at the state level.

“For the system to work like it’s supposed to, you should be able to get in on the nominating process, in other words I have a say in who gets nominated for my party,” republican delegate hopeful Mike Holmes said.

On April 14, these delegates will be this precinct's voice at the state level, deciding who will represent the republicans in the 2012 presidential election.

Many of the caucus-goers said they feel Santorum is simply the strongest candidate to run against Obama.
