GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- A marijuana DUID bill is back from the grave as Colorado Senator Steve King (R) tries once again to make it law.
Recent statistics have indicated an increase in the number of impaired drivers not only in Mesa County, but statewide, leading to multiple traffic fatalities.
King says that's reason enough to try to get the bill passed.
"Even without 64 passing, the idea of getting behind the wheel when you're impaired from THC, when you're impaired from smoking pot, puts everybody-- the traveling public-- at risk," said King.
The bill would not allow over five nanograms of the drug in the blood system while driving.
If caught under the influence, a person could be punished in the same way as a drunk driver.
And while Amendment 64 does make the drug legal, King says to take the necessary precautions.
"We don't want to take away, under our Constitution, their right to smoke marijuana, but if you get high, walk; if you get high, call a cab; if you get high, take a bus, but don't get high and drive," said King.
In order to lower the danger, King hopes to bring this bill into a law in the upcoming legislative session.
