LONGMONT, Colo. (AP) -- Authorities are investigating after someone apparently tampered with a natural gas well in the Mead area northeast of Longmont.

The Longmont Times-Call reports a Weld County Sheriff's deputy who was called to area near Weld County Road 38 and Interstate 25 early Friday morning heard a loud noise coming from the gas well equipment.

The well's operator, Synergy Resources Corp., says the valve settings were out of place and that the emergency system had automatically released the pressurized gas each time it built up to a certain point, causing the noise.
