Many in the Grand Valley spent the day after Christmas dashing from store to store, on one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

For the McElwain family, day after Christmas shopping is an annual tradition, just like Black Friday shopping.

"It's a tradition for us because of the sales," said Sheri McElwain. "They're trying to get rid of everything, so it's 50-60 percent off everything, and that's better than the before Christmas sales."

McElwain bought new shoes for her oldest son because she couldn't resist the discount.

Others were on a mission of returns and exchanges.

"We're just exchanging a couple things from Christmas for bigger sizes or smaller sizes," said Tiffinie Lambert, who was out shopping with the entire family.

Eight-year-old Trystan Shuman couldn't wait any longer to use the Claire's gift card she received yesterday for Christmas.

"I got myself a makeup bag, a new purse and sunglasses and gloves," Trystan said. "For Christmas I wanted this stuff but I didn't exactly get it, so after Christmas I can just go and get it."

Gift cards are a popular option for teens and pre-teens, but it also means foot traffic is in store for retailers.

"A lot of people are gifted money and gift cards for Christmas and I think that's one of the reasons it's such a busy week," said John Kelly, owner of Mesa Jewelers. "It's one of the busiest weeks of the year and we always do well. There's going to be some people who do exchanges, there's a lot of adjustments and ring sizing and watch sizing."

Mesa Mall opened early at 8 a.m. today and will remain open until 9 p.m. Herberger's, Target and Best Buy will keep their doors open until 10 p.m. tonight.
