PALISADE, Colo. Small business owners are not only counting up the extra profits from Small Business Saturday, but also hoping it means more customers in the future.

"Getting known, getting people to see you, but things like Small Business Saturday, the Art and Chocolate Walk, the festivals helps local people find out what's actually going on in the town," said Renee Gibson, who owns Casual Gal on Palisade's Main Street.

Gibson opened her jewelry shop more than two years ago, but she said she's still always trying to bring in new customers and encourage people to support local stores.

"If someone comes and buys a piece from me, I'm going to go next door or to the grocery store with that dollar," Gibson said.

All of the jewelry in Gibson's shop is handmade from sterling silver and offers something different from what people find in department stores, she said..

"To see somebody actually purchase a piece and actually wear it and come in and show me and to just see that, it's the ultimate," Gibson said. "That's what I'm in business for and that's why I do this."

Customers said they appreciate the uniqueness of Gibson's jewelry and the fact that they can keep their money close to home.

"They're bringing different mediums to the area and it's just important to support them and keep their businesses alive," said Michelle Sebik, who stopped by Casual Gal Saturday.

American Express created Small Business Saturday a few years ago to encourage people to shop locally for holiday presents on the busiest retail weekend of the year.
