Garfield County considering new soil contamination treatment facility

BATTLEMENT MESA, Colo. (KKCO) Battlement Mesa residents might have a new neighbor if the Garfield County Planning Commission approves a request for a soil treatment facility.

Caerus Oil and Gas submitted a proposal for a pugmill, which treats soil contaminated from oil and gas activities.

If the project is approved, contaminated soil would be trucked in to be treated at the 9.2 acre facility off Stone Quarry Road on Battlement Mesa, west of several neighborhoods.

Amanda Herberger likes to grow fruits and vegetables in her yard on Battlement Mesa and supplies her family with food the garden.

"When I think contamination, I think chemicals, I think dangerous," Herberger said. "With me having my garden right here, I don't really want to have anything that's going to be coming into our ground, into our water, into our air."

Herberger said she has to learn more about the idea, but if the pugmill is successful in cleaning up the soil without causing problems, then she is in favor of it.

"If they're being proactive, if they're getting stuff cleaned up, I'm all for it," she said.

Caerus Oil and Gas as well as the Garfield County Planning Commission both declined to comment on the proposal, but the county is supplying information and documents on its website.
