GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- The 2013 budget will remain relatively untouched, with a few increases that County Commissioners say could boost jobs and revenue in our area.

The 2013 budget is part of a two-year plan that was adopted last year with the 2012 county spending plan.

"For 2013 the county is looking to invest an additional four percent in economic vitality, which is really our role in economic development of our community with a focus on jobs," said County Administrator Chantal Unfug.

Officials say the 3.4 percent increase from last year will mostly come from the capital budget, meaning the funds will be spent on infrastructure.

The new construction could mean more jobs in Mesa County.

"Every time there are capital investments, you see job support in the local community. This is the way Mesa County turns the dollars back to the community as quickly as possible," said Unfug.

Money from the budget will also go toward the new workforce center. The building is scheduled to go up on North at 29 and 1/2 road in the Civic Center.

"It will be a wonderful, state of the art facility, where businesses can come and have hiring fairs and get services they need to find people to fill positions," said Mesa County Regional Services Director Donna Ross.

The county isn't creating any new positions this year.

"Over the past four years, we have seen a reduction in staff because we have been consolidating agencies, cross-training, and that has resulted in a loss of staff," said Unfug. "This year we are not making that recommendation."

The proposed budget is $153,597,057, with the majority of county funds going toward the Community Development and Public Safety departments.
