GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) The Grand Junction Parks and Recreation department has been recognized for their improvements to Lincoln Park and their use of funding.

The Parks and Rec. Department is receiving the Starburst Community Award for their excellent use of lottery dollars. The department received $250,000 as a grant from the lottery-funded "Great Outdoors Colorado" after making improvements to safety, accessibility, and activities for those with challenges, and giving those in the community outdoor educational opportunities.

"We talked to folks two years ago about what should we do with Lincoln Park. These are the ideas of the community coming to fruition now. Really the award goes to the community and the entire city for really loving this park and wanting it to go to the next level," Traci Wieland, Grand Junction recreation superintendent.

The Starburst Community Awards recognize the outstanding use of lottery proceeds toward community projects. During the month of November at a City Council meeting, the award will be formally given out.
