GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - The idea of starting a small business from home can seem like a daunting task, but with the help of the Grand Junction Business Incubator Center, it is not impossible.

"I was a stay-at-home mom for about 13 years," said Hadassah Berger. "Once my kids went off to school I had all this time, and my husband needed help."

Berger and her husband own Timeless Millworks, a custom cabinetry business that started close to seven years ago.

One year into it, they needed to expand and sought the help of the GJBIC.

"We have the small business development center which provides free one-on-one business consulting and low-cost workshops and classes," said Annalisa Pearson of the GJ Business Incubator Center.

The center has seen an 80 percent success rate come from those small businesses that choose to start with them, while the national rate is at a mere 20 percent.

"The majority of businesses that go through an incubator program or a set, structured program to help make sure you have all your pieces in a row, have a much higher level of success" said Kelley Flenniken, executive director of Grand Junction Economic Partnership.

As the economy continues to recover from the crash in 2008, many small businesses are taking advantage of this opportunity.

"Now is a really good time to see that things are starting to loosen up and starting to improve," said Flenniken.

The incubator center offers 60,000 square feet of manufacturing and office space. On top of that, they opened a commercial kitchen to provide a space for food entrepreneurs.

"If you're trying to do something on your own, starting from home is a really good place to do it," said Berger. "You don't have a lot of overhead, and you have good ideas, and you have some time."
