FRUITA, Colo. (KKCO) Students got their hands dirty in an effort to give back to the community they were raised in.

Mr. Whalin's 7th grade math class at Bookcliff Middle School spent the day out of school and at the state park in Fruita.

The Park Service designs projects for the kids and worked on putting a coating of dirt on an area at the park and planted grass seeds.

Many of the kids had never even been to the park before and officials say getting them active and involved in the community is important.
