GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)-- School District 51 and the Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce are trying to recruit 500 adult volunteers around the Grand Valley to meet with elementary school kids once a week to help them with reading and studying. More than 20 people went through the training.

"I learned that the main objective of the 500, touter program is not necessarily to teach reading, as much as it is to provide a positive adult role model for some kids who might really need that in their lives," said volunteer Donna Miller.

The first day of tutoring is October 24. Organizers say the tutors will be assigned a school and assigned a child.
