GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Talk about turning the Colorado National Monument into a national park has ignited the formation of movements from both sides of the debate.
Tuesday night, the Friends of the Colorado National Monument - a group against the change in classification - met to present their case to the public.
Organizers say the change will bring much more detriment than benefit to the area.
"A national park really can destroy our monument rather than protect it," says spokesman, Kent Carson. "There's an excellent possibility that that will happen, so I think that's another reason not to do this.
The effort to change the the Monument into a national park has gone back and forth for nearly a century; supporters say the increase in tourism will be extremely beneficial to the areas economy.
