GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Time 2 Drive aimed to help teen drivers in Grand Junction aware of the dangers of distracted driving.

"They don't really understand how dangerous it really is until it happens to him," said Carma Brown of Allied Insurance.

The group provides teens and parents with a safe environment to see and experience simulated events that mimic texting while driving and driving while under the influence. This is done through loose steering and highly sensitive pedals.

"They think 'Well, I can text and drive, and I'm actually good at it," said Angela Siegfried of Time 2 Drive, "but what they don't realize is that texting and driving is equivalent to a .08 [BAL]."

One parent and his sophomore son decided to stop by, and they got a chance to learn some valuable lessons.

"It was definitely a benefit for him to learn these different things," said parent Mike Blickenstaff, "and I think that will help him as he actually gets on the road."

Time 2 Drive also had a Fatal Vision goggle station, that allowed individuals to put on multiple different goggles that would impair vision. Some gave the sense of being highly intoxicated while others of being under the influence of narcotics.

"Kids need to stop and think about where they're going and how they're getting there," said police officer Rocky Baldozier.

"It is a dangerous responsibility and kids probably need to take that a little more seriously than just getting from point A to point B," said Brown.

Distracted driving is the number one cause of death among teens, proving that organizations like Time 2 Drive are crucial to changing that stat.
