Grand Junction, Colo. (KKCO) --- For years, the battle of bug repellents containing deet vs more natural remedies has been raging on and continues still today.

After some mosquitoes in Garfield County were found to be carriers of the West Nile Virus, many parents are looking for the best way to avoid those pesky and potentially harmful bites.

But the conventional brands that many of us use contain potentially harmful ingredients.

"Deet is a neurotoxin to the insect so it doesn't allow brain to muscle communication and it is show to do the same in humans," says Nutritional Health Coach at Natural Grocers, Dustin McFarland.

Fortunately, officials say that products with deet are safe as long as they are used according to the directions on the container.

But for those looking for more natural options, there are many organic repellents available at your local health food store.
