Grand Junction, Colo. (KKCO) - Thousands of holiday travelers are finding there's an app for helping you take the stress out of holiday traveling.

Whether your traveling by train, plane, or automobile this holiday season there's an app to help you out. Arnulfo Torrez plans on doing some traveling with his family this holiday season and he will have his smart phone loaded with travel apps with him every step of the way.

"I mean we definitely use Google maps pretty much to and from and stuff like that especially when we're going to find our motel and stuff like that because we've never been there,” says Arnulfo.

David Nelson is the store manager at Go Wireless here in Grand Junction. He says travel apps have become very popular. He says "the biggest deal with travel apps is just being able to book a hotel on the run. Sometimes we don't have time, we go places and we just want to have that right at our finger tips." Something Arnulfo likes to use when traveling with kids "when we're traveling as a family, you can look at the co-pilot and tell Momma to look it up real quick on the phone or the I-pad, yeah it makes it a lot easier,” says Arnulfo.

There are thousands of travel apps available. Many apps are free such as Tripit, a free travel organizer. For some apps you have to pay a small price to download it. So what’s the difference between the two?

"The biggest difference between them is the advertisements. What you pay for is not having advertisements on your phone," says David Nelson

Advertisements that can slow down the speed of your phone is the biggest thing to watch for. If you download an app and you start to see you phone slow down, start to give you lots of advertisements. At that point the best thing you can do is take your phone into a store where they can fix the problem.

So, is one app better then another? Experts say not really. It’s personal preference. The best thing is to just download the app and play with it. Some of the apps you will like, others you won't.

Arnulfo remembers growing up,” we grew up with the wrinkled old map you know what I mean, that mom would tuck everywhere in the car so , I mean it does make it easier."

And of course for those traveling with kids, like Arnulfo, there are games and books you can download to help avoid the question: "Are we there yet?"

"It keeps them occupied in the back. They can watch a movie or whatever so yeah it helps."
Keep in mind when traveling this holiday season, there really is an app for that.

Experts say the memory size of your phone determines how many apps you can download. There is no danger in downloading as many apps as you want. There are ones to help you find gas locations, check if flights at the airport are on time, or where the nearest hotel is located.
